Future Farmers of America (FFA)

Future Farmers of America (FFA) is a national organization that focuses on agriculture and student leadership. In our chapter, we work with the school farm, hydroponics in our classrooms, and aquaponics. We also learn agricultural education, start conversations on agriculture issues, and learn how to speak and advocate for sustainable agriculture. We connect with other FFA members and attend events and competitions to widen our perspective and gain knowledge.

The event shown above is the District One FFA Leadership Development Event (LDE) at John Bowne High School.

The events that we participated in were:

  • Prepared public speaking, a six to eight minute speech on a current agricultural topic
  • Extemporaneous speaking, in which each student was given an agricultural topic, and thirty minutes to write a four to six minute speech
  • Employment skills, in which the student provided a cover letter and resume, then attended a mock job interview
  • Agricultural Issues Forum, where the group of students gave a ten minute presentation on a current agricultural issue. The issue that the Harbor group focused on was agricultural runoff, and the excess nutrients in local waterways that this runoff causes. We discussed the implementation of seaweed farming, such as our work with Seaweed City, to absorb these excess nutrients.

On March 15th, our FFA 12th graders will be traveling to Schuylerville to compete in the sub-state competition for the extemporaneous speaking, employment skills, and agricultural issues!
